Crib vs. Toddler Bed

Brock is going to be 20 months old this week....I cannot believe it. I am trying to decide if he is ready for the conversion of his crib to a toddler bed. Right now, when he wakes up he has to yell "mom" or "dad" for us to come and get him. That is nice. This way we know where he is. If we convert to a toddler bed, then he can get out on his own, which scares me a little. I know that he is getting older and is a "toddler" but is he really ready for the toddler bed??? For you moms out there, when did you convert to toddler beds and what are your suggestions for a smooth transition? Thanks for all your help (in advance).

Obviously, I have no experience with this, but Amber didn't put Davis into a toddler bed until he was 2 and a half. That was this summer and he absolutely LOVES his "big boy" bed. It was the first thing he had to show "Aunt Tammy" when I came to visit.

We moved Levi to a "big boy bed" at 20 months exactly. We wanted him to have a few months in his bed before Kara got here so that he didn't feel like he was kicked out of his bed. We started with a twin mattress on the floor, then off the ground a little thinking he would fall off. He never did. Also, I thought for sure he would wander around and get up, but he never did. He stayed in bed everytime we put him there. We did begin with naps first and then went to nights the next week. One piece of advice (although we never really needed it)...put a safety knob on the inside door handle. That way, if they get up while you are sleeping, they can't walk right out of the house. They will make enough noise trying to open the door with the safety knob, that you can still hear them through the monitor.

Sorry for the novel...
